Rivers crisis: Gov Fubara finally recognises Wike’s loyalist as Assembly Speaker

Published on

Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara has officially recognised Rt. Hon. Martin Chike Amaehwule as the legitimate Speaker of the House of Assembly.

This comes after months of political tension fueled by a deepening rift between Fubara and his predecessor, former Governor Nyesom Wike. The tension escalated late last year when Amaehwule, a staunch Wike loyalist, initiated impeachment proceedings against the governor.

In reaction, Fubara refused to recognise Amaehwule as the Speaker and even took legal action against him and 26 other lawmakers who defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

However, following President Bola Tinubu’s intervention, the impeachment proceedings were dropped.
