Nigerian-born boxer gunned down by neighbour in US

Isaih Olugbemi, a 27-year-old boxer originally from Nigeria, was tragically killed after being shot multiple times in Odenton, Maryland. The incident occurred on June 17, according to local police reports.

Olugbemi was discovered with gunshot wounds on Meadowmist Way and was immediately taken to the Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center. Unfortunately, he succumbed to his injuries shortly thereafter.

Court records indicate that surveillance footage captured a white male approaching Olugbemi with a handgun and subsequently shooting him multiple times before fleeing the scene on foot. The suspect was later identified as Nicholas Giroux, a neighbor of the victim.

CBS reported that Giroux was interviewed by police on June 18, during which he confessed to the shooting. He has since been charged with first and second-degree murder.

Abraham Olugbemi, the victim’s brother, revealed that Giroux had previously threatened Isaih with a gun on at least two other occasions earlier this year, in January and June.

Isaih Olugbemi was a notable figure in the boxing community, having achieved significant success as a Junior Olympics gold medalist, a three-time Golden Gloves state champion, and a two-time Open Regional champion.

Giroux is scheduled to appear for a preliminary hearing on July 17.
