Nursing student in trouble over viral video reportedly mocking First Lady

Published on

The Delta State College of Nursing Sciences has issued a disciplinary query to a student, Osato Edobor, over a social media post related to First Lady Senator Oluremi Tinubu’s visit to the state.

The controversy stems from a viral video capturing students rejecting the First Lady’s designation as “everyone’s mother” during an event in Asaba on March 25, 2025. Edobor later shared content referencing the incident on her TikTok page, prompting the school to take action.

In a letter signed by the college’s Provost, Mrs. Evbodaghe Ogonne, the institution cited Edobor’s actions as inappropriate and in violation of student conduct guidelines outlined in the Student Handbook.

The letter described the post as a “malicious act” and ordered her to provide a written explanation within 24 hours or face disciplinary measures.

“It has come to the notice of the school authority that you, Student Nurse Osato Edobor… engaged in a malicious act of recording/singing and posting unofficial response to a song during the arrival of the First Lady,” the query read.

A source familiar with the situation revealed that Edobor, who has already repeated her class twice and is set to graduate on May 10, 2025, fears the school may take punitive action against her, potentially jeopardizing her final examinations.

Following the video’s circulation, Provost Evbodaghe stated that students had been warned to remove related posts from social media. She alleged that Edobor defied this directive and brought disrepute to the institution by making her post while in uniform.

“In our school, we have a set procedure for handling such issues. The first step is to issue a query and have her appear before a committee. If she shows remorse, we can let it go. But instead of responding, she posted it online,” Evbodaghe said.

However, sources indicate that Edobor’s post was primarily a lighthearted commentary on the trip to the event rather than an outright insult to the First Lady.

In her video, she humorously questioned the security checks at the venue and made casual remarks about the Delta State governor, noting that she could not recall his name.
